Attending the Open Championship?
Attending the 146th Open at Royal Birkdale and seeing the action first-hand delivers one of sport's iconic experiences.
The Open is the most exciting golfing event contested annually in Britain and it's the one they all want to win. This year, from the 16th to the 23rd of July, the world's best golfers will be at Royal Birkdale to do battle for the famous Claret Jug. There's nothing like seeing the action first-hand.
With the gates opening at 6am on the first two days of the Championship and the last tee time after 4pm. It's possible to watch some 15 hours of live golf in a single day. What other sport offers such extended action for a single entry ticket? Adult tickets for championship days are available from £75 (£80 as standard but there's £5 off if you pay by Mastercard) and can be purchased online at theopen.com or at the gate. If you're lucky enough to be 16-24 then the charge is £35 (with a Mastercard) and under-16s go free, they must be accompanied by an adult. If you go for a practice round (Sun-Weds) adult day tickets start from just £10.
Once in, there's a tremendous amount to do. Watch the action from one of the thousands of public seats in grandstands around the course or from one of the many excellent vantage points the dunes of Birkdale provide. There are great views around the green of the par-3 12th and behind the 16th is another good spot.
There's plenty of off-course activity too, visit the Swingzone where PGA professionals will be giving free lessons, the HSBC Golf Zone where you can test your skills and win prizes and the excellent play area for the kids. You can pick up Open merchandise in The Open Shop and you can even get the gear you buy personalised.
There's food and drink to suit all tastes. Check out The Sandwich Shop and the wood fired pizzeria. If you're not designated driver, stop in at Glenmorangie House for a whisky cocktail or go see and be seen in the famous Champagne Bar.
Lady Captain's day Mrs Sandham hosted her lady section on Sunday for the big one, Lady Captain's day!
I was kindly invited to Lady Captain's drinks and nibbles at lunch time and had a lovely couple of hours.
Shaun delivered some delightful homemade canapes and I'd suggest these are a great addition to any of you whom may be hosting a function at the club in the future. They were fantastic!
Now to the golf!
Well done to all 38 competitors who took part in very nice conditions.
The eventual winner was
Sarah Munro with a great score of 66 nett.
Sarah had been all over the north of England looking at University sites with the
Fergus and her daughter over the weekend but managed to squeeze in a late entry on Sunday.
Sarah, who won my event the week before has been showing steady progress over the last couple of years and is now dropping her handicap in style.
Can she go 3 in a row?
Congratulations also to
Amy Fletcher who shot a super 74 nett and captured second place. You're making Pappa Fletcher very proud!
Then to 3rd, and it was great to see
Iris Bratton up there again and well done
Linda Thompson who shot the same score.
In the evening, all of the ladies gathered in the clubhouse for the presentation dinner.
Once again
Shaun delivered some lovely food and all of the reports from the ladies section complimented the catering over the day. Well done Shaun!
To another lady who I saw hit some great shots on Sunday,
Mandy Ratcliffe was booming her driver but was falling foul of the old statement "drive for show and putt for dough".
Mandy had some time with me on Tuesday and has now opted for the left below right putting grip and is hoping to cut out the 3 putts and reduce her scores. Watch this space!
Making learning simple = Fun in the swing room with Zoro!
Our very own
Ian Yates was horrified when he saw his swing on video this week. Is that me he asked? Yes Zoro, I replied.
A little change to the backswing was required and it wasn't long before
Ian started to see the benefits.
Ian's amazement was great to see, especially when he saw the changes and the benefit to his ball flight, half of the effort and better strike, improved ball flight and more distance.
Well done
Ian and see you next week for step 2.
