Old ‘v’ new – can a change really help?

Our “OLD v NEW” section of last week’s newsletter has grabbed the attention of many of you. We have had lots of requests from our readers who want to see just how well their current kit performs against the more up to date equipment.

Below are two more examples of fantastic performance increases.

Clive currently uses

Clive Upton has made some great improvements to his swing in recent months. The only thing missing is the speed and distance with irons, therefore we have turned to technology to look for help.

Clive currently uses -

PING G30 irons with graphite soft-reg flex.

Following a comprehensive testing session where we tried a wide selection of techy irons with distance gain technology features, a 20-25 yard gain on 7 iron distance was achieved.

TaylorMade M4 Iron, fitted with a superlite 45 gram, low kick shaft. As we often see, the shaft was the key during this session. This shaft/head combo gave Clive 10mph more ball speed and a higher launch. Exactly what we were looking for.

Another great session saw member Steve, a low ball flight player who was looking to see what a new set of irons could do for his game. With an open mind, Steve was happy to test any of the products we suggested.

At the end of our testing session we had two contenders. Both options giving strong distance gains, forgiveness and increases in launch angle and peak heights.

Steve and I will meet again next week to do some follow up testing to determine his best match club and complete the custom fitting process.

We will have spent 2 hours testing and fitting these clubs to Steve. The process is detailed and thorough. After all, it is about ensuring we find you the clubs that best match you.

Polar opposites

As the Beast from the East and Storm Emma collided to bring Arctic conditions to the UK for a few days last week, the very best players in the world were enjoying somewhat different temperatures as they battled it out at the WGC-Mexico Championship. Any of you who watched on the box over the weekend will have noticed the mammoth distances that some of the guys were hitting the ball in Mexico, but why was this?
How were they hitting mid-irons over 200 yards and driving the first green (316 yards) with 3-woods?
Well, the golf course they were playing is 7,800 feet above sea level, which reduces drag on the golf ball meaning it can travel further than it otherwise would. In the end, it was Phil Mickelson who ended his exile from the winner’s circle with a playoff victory over compatriot Justin Thomas, who holed out from the fairway for eagle on his 72nd hole.

This was lefty’s first win since the 2013 Open Championship but comes as no surprise as he has been showing signs of returning to his best with top 10 finishes in his last three events. Mickelson’s story is remarkably similar to that of Michelle Wie, who claimed her first win since the 2014 US Open at last week’s Women’s World Championship.
