This week we thought we would also do some digging into why worn grooves on your wedges can be seriously impacting your game as well as catching up with all the news around the club.

Club news

Captain's Weekend 2019

Last weekend saw our men's Captain, Mr Greg Watson host a wonderful weekend for over 170 competitors who battled it out over the 36 hole two day event.

Starting on Friday evening with the traditional black tie dinner, Captain put on a lovely evening with great food, great company and with The Captain and Vice Captain delivering two excellent speeches.

Saturday saw round 1 get under way at 7.30am and our Captain Greg was on the first tee to greet the competitors and wish them well for their round ahead.

Captain provided all competitors with a complimentary golf ball which was a lovely gesture and appreciated by all.

On Saturday evening it was party time with food, drink, dancing and music by Geno Eccles and Hayley Eccles who you may know from the TV show, The Voice!

A packed clubhouse enjoyed a wonderful evening of entertainment.

Round 2 got underway with 9 players better than par, topped by Ian Bryson who shot an excellent 64 nett and closely followed by Trev Lafferty on 67.

As Sundays play unfolded it became we apparent we had a very closely run tournament but John Southworth came out the eventual winner on 138 with Andy Matheson, Trev Lafferty, Scott Collins and Ian Bryson all stacked on 140.

A big congratulations to all prize winners.

And finally, to Captain Greg and Anne who put on a fabulous weekend for us all. Congratulations to you and hopefully the weekend will sit in your memories for a lifetime.

Open Championship Qualifying 2019

I headed north for a practice round on Sunday and my prep went well.

The course was set up tough with narrow fairways and deep rough but my practice round went well and I felt comfortable ahead of the next day.

Whilst Monday in the North West was mild and calm, it was quite a contrast on the Angus coast of Scotland. We woke to strong winds and rain which we were relentless through the day at Panmure.

We were competing for 10 places into The Open Final Qualifying stages.

My round started well, -1 through 6 holes then 3 bogeys in 4 holes put me at plus 2 with 7 to play which was pretty good going in the conditions.

Unfortunately, a triple-bogey 7 on 12 where I got caught in the deep rough and a bogey on 15 put me at +6 and I missed qualifying by 3 shots.

Although some would say “not a bad effort” I’m disappointed as I know I could and should have got over the line. However, I will look forward to next year where I will certainly be having another try at qualifying.

PING TRIP – Gainsborough

We are setting up a day out to the PING Fitting Centre in the coming weeks.

The centre is a super facility and an ideal opportunity for golfers to test the latest kit and be custom fitted by the PING technicians.

Should you wish to join me on the trip, you will have the opportunity to be fitted for metal woods, irons, wedges and putters.

If you would like to come to PING with me, please let me know ASAP and I will set the ball rolling.

Is Your Game in Shape?

Ian, below was struggling with lots of shots going to the right rather than his normal draw flight. A few swings and a video clip showed his club face at the top of the swing had got rather weak / open , bottom picture (toe pointing down).

In the top pic you can see how we adjusted the face position, pointing a little more to the sky and this solved the problem.

So if you are missing shots to the right, this could be a simple checkpoint for you to look at.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
