Lady Captain Jane - A few thoughts and reflection on Lockdown! I didn’t realise the significance of my parting words to the group of 24 lady golfers on 17th March. After the last prizes were handed over, the teas and coffees finished, we said goodbye to Mere golf club after two lovely warm-up days of golf in the sunshine. I jested about the last supper and we’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when, not expecting what was to come! Now 7 weeks down the line life has changed! Isolation is a strange, surreal place to be but also a time of reflection, of feeling grateful for what we have and know to be important above all else! Our health and that of our families and friends, our key workers and thinkers, even it seems our politicians! Personally I have missed my family and particularly my young grandchildren as I know many of you have too. But how wonderful is the technology we take for granted. It has been easy keeping in touch, seeing and hearing them, knowing they are well on a daily basis. Also, I have loved our golf ladies WhatsApp group for news, memes and entertainment. Thanks also to Chris for his weekly updates and Andrew for his informative and cheery newsletters! I see many golf practice routines set up in gardens, hallways, lounges and kitchens. My chipping and putting has been sporadically practiced on lawn and wooden floor but walking has been my new love. I have rediscovered my home area, footpaths, nooks and crannies, canals, streams and wildlife! I have made good pesto using wild garlic collected on route! The weather has been kind to us and those I meet from a socially safe distance are warm and friendly! All food for thought, long may our community comradery continue! Still, I look forward to coming together as a golfing community again in the not too distant future?! On walking the course I noted the beautiful condition it has been kept in thanks to the couple of hardworking groundsmen not furloughed. It looks so inviting! I can’t wait to play again! In the meantime take care everyone and stay safe and well. Lady Captain, Jane Young |
