President Weekend 2020
A huge congratulations and well done to our 2020 President Penny Beckett, who hosted a lovely weekend at the club. All competitors were presented with a commemorative ball marker courtessy of Penny. Penny also introduced some normality in these difficult times by putting on a very nice barbecue for guests and players during Sundays conclusion of play. Great work Penny! |
Last Saturday, 190 golfers entered the event with play starting at 7am. Early birds Neil Chambers (64 nett), Andy Shuttleworth (66 nett), Andy Simpson & Gavin Southern (67 nett) were leaders in the clubhouse despite the morning rain. By the end of the day the weather had improved and Immediate Past Captain Greg Watson, Michael Watson (Greg’s son) and Andy Catterall all recorded 66 nett, everything to play for in the 2nd round. Over half the field made the cut mark of 76 nett. |
| A weekend to remember (in so many ways) with some excellent golf being played on both days. |
| Another success was that John Simm recorded his first ever ‘hole in one’ on the first. |
|
On to Sunday – President Penny and 16 ladies competed for the President’s Plate. The President recorded the lowest score (75 nett) but the prize goes to Amy Fletcher (76 nett) with divisional winners Linda Thompson, Kath Parkinson & Barbara Potts. After the golf the ladies enjoyed an indoor picnic and Lady Captain Jane presented the President with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from the ladies section. |
|
Back to the golf – Chris Nelson was the early leader in the clubhouse (having recorded 64 nett to give a total score of 139) which he held on to until the 3rd from last groups came in. The eventual winner, 2nd & 4th placed golfers played together in the final group. President’s Prize 2020 - Winner - Greg Watson - 133 nett
- 2nd - Neil Chambers - 135 nett
- 3rd - Andy Simpson - 136 nett
- 4th - Andy Shuttleworth - 136 nett
- Best Gross - Steve Nixon - 147 gross
- Seniors 60+ - Kevin Rolfe - 140 nett
- 1st Round Winner - Andy Catterall - 66 nett
- 1st Round R/up - Michael Watson - 66 nett
- 2nd Round Winner - Chris Nelson - 64 nett
- 2nd Round R/up - Amen Chirongoma - 68 nett
Finally it was great to see so many of the afternoon players and guests staying to enjoy a drink and a burger/hotdog and supporting their fellow golfers. Congratulations to all the prize winners. |
| The grasses used on putting greens are specifically developed to have fine texture and high plant density to provide a smooth playing surface for golfers to enjoy. A "smooth playing sutface" unfortunately is harder to maintain when golfers choose not to repair their pitchmarks.and with the recent rain and softer surfaces, the number of pitch marks are greater. Please, Please, Please repair your pitchmarks and if you can, another one or two at the same time.
Thank you. |

On the subject of a smooth roll...
All too often I have clients that come in for a putting lesson struggling with their consistency on the greens. They tend to miss putts all over the place and believe it’s their stroke which is to blame – which, don’t get me wrong, it most often is. But, sometimes, it’s actually the style of putter they’re using that hinders their natural stroke instead of working with it, and this is what needs to be addressed. So, that begs the question: Do you if you have the right putter style for YOUR game? Come and chat to a member of the team who can help you find THE CORRECT ONE. |

The UK Swing begins The British Masters finally gave European Tour fans something to cheer. Whilst the Tour had technically resumed with a couple of weakened fields in Austria, this was the first ‘proper’ European Tour event since lockdown began all those months ago. Renato Paratore was the eventual winner, with the young Italian going 62 holes before his first bogey on the 9th in the final round. Paratore’s incredible golf came at a soggy Close House course, hosted by Lee Westwood, in the first of a six-tournament “UK Swing”. This week, players high enough in the World Rankings can choose between the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational or the English Open. Next week, it will be a choice between staying put for the English Championship or heading to San Francisco for the first Major of 2020; the PGA Championship. Things are about to get interesting! If the European Tour restart has given you the golf bug once again, you can speak to us about professional coaching by clicking the button below or calling 01772 700022. We’re here to help! |
