Jordan Spieth Wins Fed-Ex Cup!

Jordan Spieth capped an unforgettable season in style with victory in the Tour Championship to secure the FedEx Cup title and a massive payday in Atlanta. Spieth scored a closing 69 to finish nine under par, four shots clear of Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose and Danny Lee. The first prize worth £977,000 and bonus of £6.5m took Spieth's earnings for the season to more than £14m and, with Jason Day finishing joint-10th, it also took the 22-year-old above the Australian and Rory McIlroy to the top of the world rankings.

Spieth took a one-shot lead over Stenson into Sunday's final round at East Lake and had doubled his advantage by the turn, although the 22-year-old was not having it all his own way. The Masters and US Open champion, who was also fourth in the Open and second in the US PGA, initially moved two shots clear by holing from 10ft for birdie on the second, but then failed to get up and down following a poor approach to the fifth and followed that error with a three-putt bogey on the sixth.

After depositing the offending ball into the lake which surrounds the green, Spieth quickly regained his composure and holed from 20ft on the eighth as playing partner Stenson made bogey after finding trees off the tee and a bunker with his approach. It looked likely that Stenson would reduce the gap to a single shot after leaving himself a tap-in for birdie on the par-five 9th, only for Spieth to hole from 18ft.

The final pair both bogeyed the 10th before Spieth, who had described his short game as "magic" on Friday, produced more evidence to back up such claims. With Stenson again within a few feet of the hole on the 11th, Spieth - who had described his short game as "magic" on Friday - holed a curling birdie putt from 45ft to maintain his two-shot cushion, Stenson looking at the American with an apparent mixture of admiration and resignation. A bogey from Stenson on the 12th took the pressure off Spieth, who saved par on the 15th from 8ft after Stenson had left his long birdie attempt inches short.

Stenson had held a three-shot lead after 36 holes and his miserable weekend was capped off by a dreaded shank on the 17th which resulted in a double-bogey six, although the 39-year-old did at least hole from almost 60ft across the 18th green for a closing birdie.

Junior golf

We are adding extra sessions to our JDP junior coaching. Sessions will be added to the programme on Monday after school and on Saturday mornings. These additional sessions will be held at The Academy and James, our PGA assistant shall be giving the lessons.

If you have children, grandchildren or friends who you think would like to get into golf then this is the ideal opportunity. Please speak to James in the pro shop or contact him direct on Tel - 07874863396

Further exciting projects for our junior members may be around the corner as our junior organiser looks to create a golf youth club at The Academy during the winter months. More information to follow over the coming weeks.

And, next week, I will meet with Andy Leigh from The Golf Foundation as he aims to increase the level of in school golf activity around the Preston area under the HSBC Golf Roots Programme. HSBC Golf Roots programmes have generated an extra 3,600 junior members at golf clubs

The Golf Foundation is delighted with recent operational results that show its programmes are having a positive impact on junior membership at golf clubs. In the period from April 2014 to March 2015 there was a 45% increase in junior membership at golf facilities - an extra 3,600 juniors joined a golf club.

With support from England Golf and the PGA we are aiming to help the next generation of young players to "Start, Learn, and Stay" playing golf, through many initiatives. Involvement with the School Games has engaged over 500,000 young people in England, and through the adapted Tri-Golf Festival, and Golf Xtreme 'Super Sixes' formats, golf is now an integral part of competitive school sport. This is particularly noticeable in primary schools, while at golf clubs, the Junior Golf Passport continues to be a popular resource delivered by 774 PGA Professionals to more than 4,600 children.
